Do I Need Braces? A Straight Answer From a Bountiful Orthodontist

Most people searching “do I need braces?” already have a feeling. Something about their bite, their front teeth, their jaw, the way they avoid smiling in photos. They’re not looking for a sales pitch. They’re looking for someone to tell them honestly whether what they’re noticing is a real problem or something they can live with.

That’s what this page is for.

At Bailey-Welling Orthodontics in Bountiful, we’ve been answering this exact question for Davis County families since 1971, for patients in Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington, Kaysville, and surrounding communities. Some people we see need braces or Invisalign. Some don’t. Some could benefit but don’t have to decide today. The purpose here isn’t to convince you one way or the other. It’s to give you enough real information to figure out where you fall before you ever step into an office.

You Probably Don’t Need Braces If…

Most orthodontic pages won’t tell you this part. We will.

You probably don’t need braces if your teeth are slightly imperfect but don’t bother you cosmetically, clean easily, and your bite functions normally. Minor rotations or a small gap that’s been stable for years, with no jaw pain, no uneven wear, and no trouble flossing, often don’t require treatment. A healthy smile doesn’t have to be a textbook smile.

You also don’t automatically need braces just because:

  • You had them as a kid and your teeth shifted slightly. A small relapse sometimes just needs a retainer, not a full round of treatment.
  • Your dentist mentioned “a little crowding.” Mention doesn’t mean emergency. An orthodontist can tell you if it’s stable or progressing.
  • One tooth is slightly out of line. Cosmetic concerns are valid, but they’re a want, not a need, and it’s worth knowing the difference before you commit to treatment.

The question isn’t whether your teeth are perfect. It’s whether what you have is causing problems, or will cause problems, if left alone.

When Braces Are Clearly Worth It

On the other end, there are situations where orthodontic treatment isn’t just cosmetic. It protects the teeth and joints you already have.

Your bite is wearing your teeth down unevenly. If your dentist has pointed out flat spots, chipped enamel, or a tooth that’s worn shorter than the others, that’s usually a bite problem. Fixing it now is cheaper than replacing teeth later.

You have jaw pain, clicking, or headaches tied to how you bite. TMJ-style symptoms aren’t always caused by the bite, but when they are, orthodontics can give real relief.

You can’t clean certain areas properly. Crowded teeth trap plaque. Teeth you can’t floss between reliably develop cavities and gum issues that keep coming back no matter how well you brush.

Your teeth are shifting noticeably as an adult. This happens more than people realize, usually due to lost teeth, gum changes, or old orthodontic work that drifted without retainer wear. Catching it early means a shorter fix.

Your child has a bite problem showing up around age 7 to 10. Early evaluation isn’t early treatment. Most of the time, we watch and wait through our 7 & Up Kids Club at no cost. But a few specific issues, like underbites, severe crossbites, or impacted teeth, are much easier to correct while the jaw is still growing, and two-phase treatment can prevent bigger problems later. At both offices, Dr. Welling and Dr. Cortez also screen for airway issues that can affect breathing, sleep, and facial development. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 for exactly this reason.

You’re self-conscious to the point that it affects you. If you’re hiding your smile in photos, covering your mouth when you laugh, or turning down job interviews because you hate how your teeth look, that’s not vanity. That’s quality of life. It counts.

The Gray Area: You Could Benefit, But You May Not Need Treatment Yet

This is where most patients we see in Bountiful and surrounding Davis County communities actually land, and it’s the category nobody writes about.

You have some crowding. Some gaps. A slight overbite. Nothing is actively hurting. Your teeth work fine. But you wonder if you should fix it while you still can, or before it gets worse.

Here’s the honest answer: for most people in this category, there’s no emergency. You have time to think about it, look into financing, talk to your family, and come back in six months. Teeth don’t fall out because of mild crowding. You are not running out the door.

Alignment issues do tend to worsen over time, especially after age 40, and treatment can get longer and more complex the longer you wait. If you’re in the gray area and you’ve been thinking about it for years, a free consultation just tells you what’s actually happening so you can make the decision with real information instead of guessing.

We’re not going to push you. That’s not how we operate.

As an adult with braces, they made the process comfortable and so easy to manage. Their accessibility through text for questions was a great support. My treatment exceeded expectations.”

What a Free Orthodontic Consultation in Bountiful Actually Includes

A lot of people avoid scheduling a consultation because they think it commits them to something. It doesn’t.

At our Bountiful office at 59 W Pages Ln, a free consultation is exactly what it sounds like. Dr. Welling or Dr. Cortez will look at your teeth and bite, take the digital records needed to see what’s going on (no goopy impressions, we use the iTero digital scanner), and tell you honestly what they see. Here’s what to expect at your first visit if you want a full walkthrough.

You’ll get three things before you leave:

  1. A clear answer on whether treatment is recommended, optional, or not needed.
  2. If treatment is recommended, a realistic timeline and the treatment options that fit your case, whether that’s braces at our Bountiful and Farmington offices, Invisalign treatment, or something more specialized.
  3. A full cost breakdown, with insurance benefits already factored in, and the monthly payment options available to you.

You’re free to think about it. Most people do. Nothing gets scheduled unless you ask for it to be scheduled.

Who Typically Comes In Asking This Question

Understanding who else is asking might help you figure out where you fit.

Parents of kids ages 7 to 12 who were told by a dentist that their child might need braces “eventually” and want a real assessment. This is often our 7 & Up Kids Club territory, where we monitor growth and only start treatment when it’s genuinely needed. No pressure, no rush.

Teenagers whose friends already have braces or Invisalign and who’ve started wondering if it’s their turn. The answer is usually yes if crowding or a bite problem exists, and the teen years are often the most efficient time to correct things.

Adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who never got treatment as kids and have been thinking about it for years. Modern options, especially Invisalign for adults, have made adult orthodontic treatment far more manageable than the metal-mouth experience they remember from middle school. We treat a significant portion of adults at our Bountiful office, and many of them are correcting issues they’ve lived with for decades.

People whose teeth have shifted after previous orthodontic work. Retainer wear drops off, teeth drift, and eventually the smile you had at 18 isn’t the smile you have at 35. Our retainer program handles both new and relapse cases, and this group often needs shorter treatment than they fear.

“Everything about our experience here was 5 stars! My dentist recommended them to us, and we were not disappointed. Both orthodontists were amazing. We’re very happy with my son’s end result, he even finished ahead of schedule.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces

How do I know if I really need braces?

A qualified orthodontist is the only one who can say definitively, because some alignment issues are invisible from the outside. If you’re seeing crowding, gaps, bite problems, jaw pain, or uneven wear, those are real signals. A free consultation gives you the actual answer without committing you to anything.

What are the signs you need braces?

The most common signs are crowded or crooked teeth, gaps that trap food, a bite that doesn’t line up (overbite, underbite, open bite, or crossbite), jaw pain or clicking, cheek biting while eating, and teeth that have visibly shifted over time. Any one of these is worth an evaluation.

Can I tell at home, or do I need an x-ray?

You can spot most obvious alignment and bite issues in a mirror. What you can’t see are things like impacted teeth, root position, jaw joint condition, and early bone-level changes. An orthodontic exam combines what you can see with what imaging reveals, which is why a professional opinion is worth more than a self-check.

Does my child need braces at age 7?

Probably not yet, but age 7 is the right time for a first evaluation. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends this age because a few specific issues, like underbites and severe crossbites, are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. For most kids we see, we simply monitor growth through our 7 & Up Kids Club at no cost until treatment is actually needed.

Am I too old to get braces?

No. The biology that lets teeth move at 14 works at 40, 60, and beyond. Adult treatment is often slightly slower than teen treatment because the bone is denser, but outcomes are just as good. A meaningful portion of our patients in Bountiful are adults correcting things they’ve lived with for years.

How much do braces cost in Bountiful, UT?

Treatment at Bailey-Welling Orthodontics typically starts around $2,800 for shorter cases and rarely exceeds $7,000. Exact pricing depends on complexity. The full cost breakdown for Bountiful patients covers insurance, payment plans, and what drives the final number.

Can I get braces without a dentist referral?

Yes. You can call or schedule directly. Many patients come to us after a dentist mentions something, but a referral isn’t required to book a free consultation.

Can Invisalign fix the same problems as braces?

In most cases, yes. Bailey-Welling is a Diamond+ Invisalign Provider, and we treat all levels of complexity with clear aligners, including overbites, underbites, open bites, and significant crowding. At our office, braces and Invisalign are priced the same, so the recommendation is based purely on what fits your case, not on what costs more.

What if my dentist said I don’t need braces but I still want them?

That’s a legitimate reason to come in. Dentists and orthodontists evaluate differently, and cosmetic goals are valid even when clinical necessity isn’t there. An orthodontist can walk you through what’s possible, what’s worth it, and what you can skip.

How long does treatment usually take?

Most cases run 12 to 24 months. Simple cases finish in 6 to 9 months. Complex cases occasionally go longer. Timeline is part of what you’ll learn at the consultation so you know what you’re looking at before deciding.

What if I just need a small fix?

Not every case requires full braces or a full Invisalign course. Short-term treatment exists for mild cases and is part of what the orthodontist will discuss if it fits your situation. We won’t recommend more than you actually need.
